An in-house course is built for one organisation. Industrial and governmental entities have used this format to acquire a profound knowledge of desalination and to deepen the know-how that already exists in their own staff. In-house courses have been part of the institute's range of advanced training since 2004, alongside seminars and workshops.
The starting point is not a catalogue but the plant and the roles in it. A course is assembled from the subject areas of the Academy and cut to the customer's process, and it is held in the customer's language where this is possible. Documented examples reach from markets and fundamentals through applied design calculation for MSF, MED, MED-TVC and MVC plants, pre-treatment and post-treatment, materials and cost, up to environmental aspects and future developments. One documented course covered intake structures in full depth for a single manufacturer: design features for seasonal events such as jellyfish or seagrass, materials and corrosion protection, fish protection, mechanical equipment and its selection criteria, hydraulic rules, control loops including pump control and emergency concepts, the individual cleaning stages of the cascade, and general design rules for redundancy, safety, maintenance planning, availability and spare part stocking.
For operating and operational staff the institute works with a form of in-plant training comparable to the German sandwich-course system, in cooperation with other training centres. Staff qualified in this way receive a certificate.
The Academy also carries a role-based qualification path, the "desalter" qualification. It can be started directly after university education and is equally suitable for employees with long experience in the business. It is offered as block instruction and is therefore compatible with a full working week.
Every in-house course runs on the Academy's own learning platform, in a section reserved for the customer, so that material, recordings and certificates stay with the organisation after the course has ended.
