A workshop is the Academy's intensive format. Renowned experts report on a single subject area of desalination, and the subject is worked through with the participants rather than only presented. Typical fields are planning (cost, environmental impacts and compatibility, process, design, selection of materials), installation and the required approval procedures, and the operation and maintenance of desalination plants.
Workshops usually last 2 to 4 days. A workshop combines full class lectures, discussions, calculations, case studies and, where a suitable site is available, a field trip. Where it is possible and reasonable, workshops take place at sites that have a relevance to the topic covered. Otherwise they are held on the premises of the institute.
Workshops are equally suitable for management, operational staff and students. Every participant receives a certificate giving evidence of attendance. A workshop can be completed with a written examination. Participants who pass the examination receive the corresponding certificate.
Workshops are held in English. They can be arranged as individual events; where demand is high, a workshop is repeated regularly. Every participant is asked to complete the Academy evaluation form on content, lecturers and organisation, and the results feed back into the next class.
*Reference from the archive: the workshop "Membrane Technology for Saline Waters" (W-002-2014, Duisburg, 4 days) was attended by 16 participants from 11 nations and taught by 16 experts from 4 nations, half of them from universities and research, half from operating industry. Participants who passed the written examination were credited 3.5 ECTS credits towards their Bachelor's or Master's studies.*
